English

Led by Mrs Newbury (Literacy) and Mrs Holt (Phonics)

English is recognised as fundamental to the children’s learning and is an essential and integral part of all areas of the curriculum.  We aim for children to communicate effectively in speech and writing with confidence and precision.  Our children are encouraged to listen with understanding and respond appropriately.  We aim for pupils to be independent, enthusiastic and knowledgeable readers, inspired by the BcL Reading-Inspired Curriculum.  Pupils are taught to structure sentences grammatically, to punctuate and spell correctly and to use a legible style of handwriting. Since the implementation of our Reading-Inspired Curriculum, we have introduced a range of strategies inspired by the visual image to further develop our young writers; this includes the increased use of picture books and film. We are also developing our use of the learning environment to share good examples. We started to use the Twinkl phonics scheme in summer 2022. We do not use a specific scheme for reading in school.

Please find below the link to Twinkl phonics. This is a membership only resource but parents and carers are invited to visit to explore:
